Church and charities

"We are privileged to act for some wonderful church and charitable organisations. Their dedicated leaders are a constant source of inspiration." Pat Mullins

Our firm has acted for church bodies, religious orders, private schools and charities for more than 25 years.  Our long-term interest in and commitment to this sector means we have developed a depth of understanding of the issues, problems and difficulties confronting these bodies that, we believe, is unmatched in Queensland.  Our commitment and understanding is further demonstrated by the fact that partner, Pat Mullins, is the current chair of both the Council of a Private Catholic School and also the Board of a Religious Charity.  Our experience in this sector is truly hands-on.

Religious orders are currently undergoing structural change.  This requires particular legal expertise (which can be difficult to find).  Our experience in advising a number of Australia’s largest religious orders and other church bodies over many years is an invaluable resource to our clients.  Not only do they benefit from our understanding of civil law requirements, but senior members of our team also have particular sensitivity to the requirements of Canon Law.  Our involvement in this sector is a truly ecumenical one.  We act for clients across a number of different Christian churches and inter-religious lines.

In the charity sector, our particular expertise is with welfare organisations.  Religious bodies today are looking to restructure their welfare arms or related charities.  We have the expertise, experience and sensitivity to offer the most practical advice and solutions.

We advise the industry on:

  • policy development
  • employment
  • commercial advice
  • risk management and compliance
  • advice on corporate structure & constitutions
  • accreditation of non-state schools.
