Areas of expertise

Pat practises in the areas of employment, church and charities, education and insurance litigation.  He has 32 years' experience in these fields.

As leader of the firm's employment practice, Pat advises corporate employers as well as peak sporting bodies, sports clubs, licensed clubs and charities on employment, industrial relations and workplace health and safety matters.  Pat has similar experience acting for some of Australia's largest Religious Orders and other Church Bodies.  He advises these bodies on the day-to-day operation of their schools and charities.  His experience includes advising on legislative compliance and risk management strategies in areas such as child protection, privacy and the development of protocols for the resolution of complaints.

In 2012 Pat commenced formal academic studies in the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church and he continues to pursue these studies to complement his experience in advising Church Bodies.

Pat has a special interest in the important and challenging areas of access to justice and pro bono legal services.  He has been involved on the Queensland Law Society and Law Council of Australia committees in these areas.  Pat has had a long and significant pro bono involvement with not-for-profit organisations in the welfare, education and healthcare sectors.  He currently chairs the Board of The Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital Limited.

Pat's insurance litigation experience has been principally in the workers compensation field.  He is a Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in both Personal Injuries Law and Mediation Law.  Pat's dual accreditation is unique in Queensland.  He mediates disputes relating to personal injury, employment and industrial relations, deceased estates, commercial and other disputes.  He is the only accredited specialist in mediation law who mediates disputes in these areas.  This extensive experience, coupled with his strong communication and people skills, are the foundation of his success in the most difficult and complex disputes.
