Paul Lutvey, Partner "Had I committed a triple murder and received three consecutive life sentences I would now be eligible for parole. Instead I chose the wiser path of accepting five year articles with Mr Mullins Senior at his newly founded practice and now find myself having been at this firm for over 25 years. I have never regretted this choice.
When I commenced on 12 January 1981, Pat and John were still article clerks. But due to Mr Mullins' absence, they were actually running the office! There was a total of nine staff including me crammed into a small office in Edward Street, where if a client instructed us to ‘swing a cat’ we would have had to refer them to another law firm.
As you would imagine, in this time I have seen some change; from electric typewriters and carbon copies to the latest computer and printing technology, the implementation of a new device known as a fax machine, a number of office moves, the comings and goings of staff, changes in letterhead and over 24 Christmas parties. This list could go on but in looking back over those years the one thing that has not changed are the firm's values.
It is evident in hindsight that the values bestowed by Mr Mullins Senior were and are the foundation of the firm and its growth to now and will be for the future.
As a measure of time, it has taken a long while to get to where we are, but like all successful businesses we will not stand still. We accept each new challenge as they confront us, which is why I believe in our continued success well into the future.
Lastly I congratulate Pat and John. This successful law firm owes them enormously for their dedication and wise leadership, to have brought this firm from such meagre beginnings to what it is today." |

Kate Whalan, Associate "Having completed my articles at Mullins in 2001, been promoted to Associate and continued my employment with the firm, I have often wondered how Mullins measures up to other firms. I have always believed that at Mullins I have been on an exceptionally good wicket, but not having worked anywhere else, I was reliant on friends and colleagues at other firms to benchmark against their experiences. That is, until one of my friends commenced work at Mullins on my recommendation.
The quality of work and the autonomy that he is afforded at Mullins exceeds his expectations. He loves the firm's friendly, inclusive culture and its work/life balance. He loves the fact that the partners here encourage professional and personal development and that there is a clear path for progression within the firm. In addition to the quality working environment and supportive mentors, he was excited to discover that the firm also rewards its staff with birthday leave, breakfasts each morning, gym membership subsidies, boot camps, yoga classes and sponsorship for other sporting events.
Mullins is a dynamic, progressive, rewarding and fun place to work. I now have no doubt in my mind that it is a privilege to work here." |

Matt Bradford, Associate "My life at Mullins began as an Articled Clerk over four years ago and I'm now an Associate in the Hospitality Group. Working at Mullins has been a fantastic experience, as I've been exposed to high quality legal matters and been allowed to work quite autonomously, but with guidance always available from senior practitioners whenever it's required. The depth of work at the firm has allowed me to specialise my practice in areas that I find most interesting – hotels, clubs and sport – which makes my work both enjoyable and satisfying.
However, the main benefit of working at Mullins is that there is genuinely a work/life balance, with plenty of staff benefits and expectations from partners that are more than reasonable. This balance is probably rare for a large commercial law firm that has such high quality work. The culture and social side of the workplace make for an enjoyable atmosphere and I feel quite lucky to work with such a great team of people."

Renae Parkin, Legal Assistant "I joined Mullins Lawyers in September 2003 as a Legal Assistant (chief organiser) for Curt Schatz in the area of Hospitality. Obviously, having worked for the same person for this length of time, Curt and I have a great working relationship and he is someone I respect both professionally and personally.
Hospitality law is quite a unique area to work in, with no day ever the same for us! The clients are colourful, and the work is always interesting. Our entire team is a fantastic mix of people and we all work well together as a cohesive team.
Life is always hectic, and so I value the firm's policy that we have a work/life balance. Having watched the firm go through many growth phases, challenges and changes, it's caring culture has remained the same, and I think it always will." |
